Palworld breeding passives: what the odds actually are

This Palworld breeding passives calculator starts from the one number found for this page with a stated method: put in how many eggs you can stand to hatch for a passive your pair both already carry, and it works out the odds, plus the assumption that number leans on.

Breeding passive inheritance odds

For one passive your chosen pair already both carry, with no Special Cake (neither source checked for this page sizes the Cake's boost; see the ledger below). Built on Game8's ~100-hatch test: a shared passive lands on the child about 46.0% of the time (opens in a new tab), with roughly a 33.0% chance the child inherits none at all.

Average eggs per success

An average, not a guarantee, some runs need fewer, some need more.

Assumes hatches are independent of each other (one egg's outcome does not change the next egg's odds), and that Game8's ~100-hatch rate holds at your current hatch count. That is a small sample, so treat it as a working estimate. Only one parent carries the target passive? No source checked for this page publishes a rate for that case. See the claim ledger below.

Effects and star rankings for these Palworld breeding passives are transcribed from the same Game8 page the odds above come from. "Skip if" is not in the source. It is the downside the effect number implies, made explicit rather than left for you to notice after the chain is already bred.

  1. Pick one target from the Palworld breeding passives table above. The calculator only answers for one at a time. The source it is built on measured a single passive's odds, not how a second target changes them, and this page will not guess at that second number.
  2. Get that one passive onto both parents before you start counting eggs. There is no published rate for "only one parent has it" (see the ledger below), so a pair that is only halfway there is not a number this page can estimate for you.
  3. The mechanic in the ledger below describes a combined pool of both parents' passives with no published per-slot formula. Guides commonly recommend keeping the rest of both parents' slots clean rather than full of unrelated passives, but no source checked for this page states by how much that changes your target's odds, so treat it as a habit, not a number.
  4. Budget eggs, not attempts. The calculator's "average eggs per success" number is what a Cake bill translates into. Full ingredient cost is on the cake page.

What is actually established

Each claim below about Palworld breeding passives was checked against the page cited next to it. The label says how firm that footing is. Every claim on this page is "reported" rather than "measured". See the note on the inheritance-rate claim for why.

Patch-note text, via coverage
Patch-note content, quoted verbatim from a third-party write-up rather than Pocketpair’s own post. The substance is firm; the exact wording is the write-up’s, not necessarily the publisher’s. Nothing on this page qualifies yet.
Measured, method shown
A published number that comes with a stated method or sample size, so you can judge it. Nothing on this page qualifies yet.
Stated by a source
A named source asserts it, but publishes no method or sample size. Usable as a lead, not as a constant.
Sources disagree
Different sources give materially different values. Where that happens, this page shows the spread instead of picking a winner. Nothing on this page qualifies yet.

A Pal can carry up to 4 different passive skills at once.

When breeding, the child randomly inherits 0-4 passives drawn from the combined pool of both parents' passives, and any unfilled slots can be topped up with a random passive.

When breeding, the child will randomly inherit 0-4 skills based on the pool of passives that the two parent Pals have. If you're lucky, the child can inherit all 4 Passive Skills from a parent. Also, any empty passive slots that don't have an inherited skill can be filled up by a random passive instead.

This is the mechanic the calculator on this page is built around. It states direction and shape (a pool, a cap of 4, random fill) but no per-slot formula, so the calculator below does not attempt to model a formula that was never published.

When both parents already carry the same passive, that passive is inherited by the child about 46% of the time per egg, with roughly a 33% chance the child inherits no passives at all.

If both parents have the same passive that you want to pass on to the offsprings, it still does not guarantee passive inheritance. After hatching 100 Pals, our team found out that the passive skill is only passed on 46% of the time with a 33% chance that no passives will be inherited.

A sample of about 100 hatches, one outlet, no published margin of error. The page also carried an "updating for Version 1.0" banner at the time it was read, meaning this figure may predate the 1.0 patch. Kept as the load-bearing number for the calculator anyway, because it is the only rate anywhere in the sources checked for this page that states its method. Downgraded from this site's "measured" tier to "reported" specifically because the sample size and version are both open questions, not because the method is unstated.

  4. 04Stated by a source

Across hatched passives, roughly 24% traced to the male parent, 20% to the female parent, 21% arrived from a random roll, and 34% of eggs inherited nothing.

From Male Parent: 24%, From Female Parent: 20%, Random from Both: 21%, No Passives Inherited: 34%.

This answers a different question from the 46% figure above: which parent an inherited passive traces back to, not whether your specific target passive shows up. It is not used by the calculator, because turning "the male parent is favoured overall" into "your target passive has X% odds if only the male carries it" is not a step this page's single source takes, and inventing that step would be exactly the failure this site exists to point at.

  5. 05Stated by a source

The Special Cake and Ancient Hatchery are both said to improve passive inheritance odds, without either source publishing a number for the size of the effect.

Game8: "It's highly recommended to do this using both the Ancient Hatchery and Special Cakes, since they have a bonus to passing down rare passive and amount of passives, respectively." GPORTAL: "Improves the chance that multiple passive skills will be inherited."

Two independent sources agree Special Cake helps and disagree on nothing they both state, which is unusual for this site's claim ledgers. Neither publishes by how much, so the calculator below models the no-cake case only and says so on screen.

Palworld breeding passives questions

How does passive skill inheritance work when breeding in Palworld?

The child draws from a combined pool of both parents' passives (up to 4 each) and randomly inherits between 0 and 4 of them, with any unfilled slots topped up by a random passive. That mechanic is stated by Game8 without a published formula for the odds at each slot.

What is the chance a passive gets inherited in Palworld?

Of the sources checked for this page, only Game8 states a method: when both parents already carry the same passive, its ~100-hatch test found it passed on about 46% of the time, with roughly a 33% chance the child inherited no passives at all. That is a single source and a modest sample, and the page carried an "updating for 1.0" notice when it was read. Treat it as a working estimate, not a settled constant.

Does the mother or father pass down passives more often in Palworld?

Game8's breakdown traced 24% of inherited passives to the male parent versus 20% to the female, with 21% from a random roll and 34% of eggs inheriting nothing. That answers "which parent did this passive come from", not "what are my odds if only one parent carries my target". No source checked for this page answers the second question.

How many passive skills can a Pal have?

Up to 4 at once, per Game8. A child that inherits fewer than 4 from the parent pool gets the rest filled with a random passive rather than staying empty.

Does the Special Cake improve passive inheritance odds?

Two sources say yes without giving a number: Game8 recommends Special Cakes for "amount of passives" and the Ancient Hatchery for "rare passive" odds, and GPORTAL's 1.0 patch-note coverage states the Special Cake "improves the chance that multiple passive skills will be inherited." The calculator on this page models the no-cake case, because neither source sizes the boost.
