Palworld’s mutation rate: the published numbers disagree by 5-10x

On a standard cake, one source says 1% per egg and another says 5–10%. Two more give no number at all. Same mechanic, same condition. Here is what each source states, side by side, and the patch-note wording for the parts that are settled.

The disagreement

Published Palworld mutation rates by source
SourceStandard cakeMutation-focused cakeMethod shown
Palpedia (opens in a new tab)1%3% (Extravagant Vegetable Cake)Not stated
PlayerAuctions (opens in a new tab)5–10%No number givenNot stated
XGamingServer (opens in a new tab)No number — "low chance"No number (says it helps)
GPORTAL (1.0 patch-notes coverage) (opens in a new tab)No number — "a low probability"No number (says it raises the chance)

What to do with that: budget for the low end. If the true rate is near 1% and you planned around 5–10%, you run out of cake five to ten times sooner than expected. Planning low and being wrong just means you finish early.

What is actually established

Each claim below was checked against the page cited next to it. The label says how firm that footing is.

Patch-note text, via coverage
Wording from the 1.0 patch notes, quoted verbatim — but read in a third-party write-up, not on Pocketpair’s own channel. Firm on substance; one step removed on provenance.
Measured, method shown
A published number that comes with a stated method or sample size, so you can judge it. Nothing on this page qualifies yet.
Stated by a source
A named source asserts it, but publishes no method or sample size. Usable as a lead, not as a constant.
Sources disagree
Different sources give materially different values. Where that happens, this page shows the spread instead of picking a winner.
  1. 01Patch-note text, via coverage

Since version 1.0, breeding has a small chance to hatch a mutated Pal instead of the normal result.

"Since version 1.0, there has been a small chance that a mutated Pal will hatch from an egg when breeding."

  2. 02Patch-note text, via coverage

Mutated Pals have higher stats than the normal breeding result, plus a unique passive ability.

"Mutated Pals have: higher stats than the normal breeding result" and "a unique passive ability."

  3. 03Patch-note text, via coverage

The Deluxe Vegetable Cake increases the likelihood of mutations and better stats.

"Increases the likelihood of mutations and better stats."

Direction only. No source we read puts a number on how much it moves.

  4. 04Patch-note text, via coverage

The Special Cake improves the chance that multiple passive skills will be inherited.

"Improves the chance that multiple passive skills will be inherited."

This is about inheriting parent passives generally. It is not stated to be about mutation-exclusive passives, and guides that blur the two are going beyond the note.

  5. 05Sources disagree

The base mutation rate per egg is not settled: published figures run from 1% to 5–10%.

Palpedia: "1% chance to be a mutation", "3% with an Extravagant Vegetable Cake".

That is a five- to tenfold disagreement about the same mechanic under the same condition, and neither source publishes a method or sample size. Two other guides we read give no number at all. If you are budgeting cake and hatches, this spread is the single most important thing on this page.

Source: Palpedia (1% / 3%) vs PlayerAuctions (5–10%) (opens in a new tab)

  6. 06Patch-note text, via coverage

The 1.0 patch-notes coverage we read describes the chance only as "a low probability" and gives no percentage.

Scoped deliberately to what we read. We have not audited every Pocketpair channel, so this says "we did not find a published rate", not "no rate exists anywhere".

  7. 07Stated by a source

Breeding runs from a Breeding Farm unlocked via the technology tree, and consumes cake.

Guides commonly cite Technology Level 19 for the unlock. We have not verified that number against in-game text, so it is not stated as fact here.

Still open

Listed rather than answered, because a plausible-sounding guess here is exactly how a 1% and a 10% figure end up circulating side by side:

  • Which of the published rates is right, from a logged hatch count with the cake type recorded.
  • How much each cake tier actually moves the rate, in numbers rather than direction.
  • A complete list of mutation-exclusive passives, and whether they can be inherited into a later generation.
  • Whether parent species, IVs, or existing passives affect mutation odds at all.

Corrections

An earlier version of this page asserted that guides all repeat a “~5%” figure, and cited XGamingServer for it. That page gives no percentage at all. The number had been carried over from a search summary without checking the source — the exact mistake this page criticises. It was removed on 2026-08-08 and replaced with the comparison above.

Questions

What is the mutation chance in Palworld 1.0?

There is no settled figure. Palpedia states 1% per egg (3% with an Extravagant Vegetable Cake); PlayerAuctions states 5–10% with a normal cake. Neither publishes a sample size. Two other guides we read give no number at all, and the 1.0 patch notes describe it only as a low probability.

Which number should I plan around?

Plan around the low end. If the true rate is nearer 1% and you budget for 5%, you run out of cake roughly five times sooner than expected. The reverse error just means you finish early.

What do mutated Pals actually get?

Higher stats than the normal breeding result, plus a unique passive ability. This is patch-note wording rather than a community estimate — though we read it in a third-party write-up, not on Pocketpair’s own channel.

Does the Deluxe Vegetable Cake really help?

Yes — the patch notes say it increases the likelihood of mutations and better stats. What no source we read states is by how much, so you cannot currently calculate how many hatches it saves you.
